Magnetic Migration

If you’ve come across this page as a result of finding a little metal bird perched in an unlikely place, thank you for being curious enough to explore your find further. I would like to invite you to participate in my little project which stemmed from a concept I began working with while creating the sculpture “Secondary Growth”, which can be viewed on this site. I will be placing a series of magnetic “Nuthatch” sculptures on steel structures that I find interesting as I travel around the country. If you’ve found one of these little sculptures, I would love to have your participation by asking you to find another “ready made” steel surface and relocate the bird for another curious person to find. I’m really excited to see what people come up with and have enabled this site so you can upload a photo directly to this page. Please post a photo, and leave a note with city, date, what the structure is, and any other information you’d like to share about the placement. If you come up with a particularly interesting placement and photo, and you provide me with a way to get in contact with you, I’ll send you one of the little birds to keep for your own. If you just can’t part with the one you’ve found and prefer to keep it,, that’s ok too. If you could leave a comment that the bird is “out of circulation” I’d be grateful. Thanks in advance for your participation.

Another Nuthatch has been let loose. This time at Lincoln Middle School where I had the pleasure of presenting for “Career Day”. I talked with a great bunch of kids about what it’s like to be a working artist and got a chance to see some real talent at work with the clay I brought. Thanks to all that chose my talk (and those of you who didn’t, and just got stuck there because the Chef’s group was full. It’s hard to compete with ice cream sandwiches). Thanks also to Miss Sapieka for inviting me. I had a great time. The school offered up a great deal of opportunities to make some neat compositions and it was hard to figure out where best to leave the bird. Alright kids, get out there and find it.

Thanks to Nan and her observant colleagues for not only discovering the first of three nuthatches placed in the preserve, but also taking the time to shoot a photo and send it to me. I imagine the other two are still out there somewhere waiting to be found. This new series was done in conjunction with the Friends of Ryerson Woods “Aviary” art exhibition that will be on display until April 28th. For more info on the exhibit, and the preserve in general, visit
http://www.ryersonwoods.org/p/programs.html

The third piece in the series was given to fellow sculptor Darrell Davis to take along home with him to Arlington Texas. I’m looking forward to seeing what he comes up with.

The first Nuthatch was placed on the bridge on Sunday evening after the show. Thanks to everyone who attended, and for your enthusiasm regarding this little project.
